Cooper Hurley Supports Norfolk Children’s Awards Banquet
Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers has again agreed to be a sponsor of the Regional Children’s Awards Banquet hosted by “God’s X Gangsters” on December 15.
The event at New Hope Community Center on Brest Avenue in Norfolk, will feature public officials, regional leaders, pastors as well as members of churches and non-profits. The event is intended to feed kids from deprived backgrounds and help keep them away from gangs. It is the third year that Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers has sponsored the event.
The organization was set up by Rev. Bill Emery, who is a former gang member. God’s X Gangsters (GXG) started life in 1998 in Fairmont Park, Virginia and has rapidly spread throughout southeast Virginia. Bill Emery graduated from Internship at Beacon of Hope Ministries in Portsmouth and began using his personal expertise in gang recovery to address the growing problems associated with violent gang related activities in Hampton Roads.
Emery started working out his home by mentoring difficult youth one on one, and in small groups. The God’s X Gangsters (GXG) program attendance grew to between 35-45 youth every week and forced GXG to move to a nearby church social hall to accommodate the program’s growing numbers.
GXG is a 501 c-3 non-profit organization. “Teams generally seek us who are in need of some answers that include grass-roots focus, with a history of successful involvement,” the organization’s website states. “We are successfully addressing previously at-risk and delinquent youth, and interfacing them into a lifestyle of outstanding citizenship,” it adds.
Emery has worked with ex-offenders for more than a decade. He says his organization allows him to become a “point source of support where angry youth could discuss their grievances, economic disparities, police confrontations, parental abuse, neighborhood problems, school truancy, and at-risk behaviors in their arenas of activity”
