Portsmouth Coast Guard Tony Jaime Suffers Serious Injuries in Accident with a Dump Truck

As a personal injury lawyer who represents many military families in Hampton Roads, I was horrified to read about how the actions of a dump truck almost cost a Coast Guardsman his life.
Tony Jaime regularly rides his bike down Frederick Boulevard in Portsmouth, but he suffered a terrifying accident last Tuesday. WAVY.com interviewed his family who said a truck ran him over and left the accident scene. The Coast Guardsman was lucky to escape with his life but his family can’t understand the callous action on this hit-and-run driver.
WAVY.com reported on how Mr. Jaime bikes to the Coast Guard base to save money and because he always wanted to ride to work.
Last Tuesday as he approached the intersection of Turnpike and Fredrick Boulevard, he rode alongside a gray dump truck to his left, said his wife Jamie Jaime.
“He thought the truck was going straight at the intersection,” she said. “Tony was going straight at the intersection and he realized the truck was just making a wide turn.”
She said the truck turned right and Tony Jaime tried to brake, but it was too late to save him from injury. “The side of the truck hit him and then the back wheels all ran over him,” his wife said.
The Coast Guard told her he saw the truck drive off from the accident scene, without stopping. The accident put Tony Jaimie into intensive care.
His wife said he was left with numerous broken bones and many fractures. He was also left with internal injuries. Family members say he will be in intensive care for several weeks.
The family is not sure if the dump truck driver even realized he hit a cyclist, according to the WAVY report.
This is a horrific tragedy to befall someone serving his country. I hope this young Coast Guard makes an eventual recovery but am well aware of the obstacles he faces and the costs that his family will face. A page has been set up to donate money to Tony Jaime’s recovery.
Dump trucks are among the most dangerous vehicles on the road. They have many blind spots and are involved in a disproportionate number of accidents. I hope this driver is apprehended as soon as possible and brought to justice for his actions. There are few things worse than leaving the scene of an accident.
