Sailor is Killed in Accident Involving School Bus in Virginia Beach
A sailor has died in Virginia Beach after a school bus crashed into his car at South Independence Boulevard and Holland Road, according to police.
The Virginian-Pilot, citing Virginia Beach police spokeswoman Tonya Borman, reported the sailor was ejected and hit by the bus.
However, WAVY.com reported the driver was outside his vehicle when he was struck by the bus.
“The preliminary investigation revealed the driver of the other vehicle, identified as Christian Montes of Virginia Beach, was outside his vehicle when he was struck by the bus. Montes died at the scene,” WAVY reported.

The TV report stated the sailor’s car was disabled and stopped in the northbound lane of Holland Road.
As a Virginia Beach car accident injury lawyer who represents many military families, I was appalled and saddened to read these reports. My thoughts are with the sailor’s family at this tragic time.
The bus was carrying 35 students. Some minor injuries were reported. Dale Gauding, a spokesman for Sentara hospitals, confirmed seven students had been transported to Sentara Princess Anne Hospital, and four to the Sentara Independence free-standing emergency room.
Some of them were complaining of headaches and one of them reported back pain. All of them were expected to be treated and released.
Accidents involving school buses are always emotive for all involved. It’s not yet clear why the bus driver hit a motorist.
WAVY reported the cause of this crash is being investigated, although police confirm speed was not a factor. The Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office and investigators will determine whether or not to file charges in the wake of the tragedy.
The family of the deceased driver may have grounds to file a wrongful death lawsuit. A death can leave those who are left behind struggling to meet many costs. See this article about what you can claim for in a wrongful death case.
