Four people riding on a bike were mown down on Doctor Drive, a suburban street in Virginia Beach. Police later charged an 85-year-old man from Virginia Beach with reckless driving.
We were relieved to read a report on NewsChannel 3 that cyclist Kristen Hoffman and one of her children are recovering from their injuries.
However, the horrendous nature of these injuries is made plain in the TV channel report.
The accident occurred on Doctor Drive close to Lynnhaven Elementary School. The Hoffman family was on a bike ride. Kristen Hoffman was reportedly on the bike with her kids riding in a child trailer attached behind it.
Dorothy Thomas, who is Kristen’s aunt, told Channel 3 the mother’s injuries were horrendous. It could have been even worse if Kristen had not done everything she could to protect her kids. She held her baby on her left side to protect the infant during the crash.
The infant recovered with no injuries. Another child sustained life-threatening injuries and was reported to be recovering from surgery in the ICU. Kristen Hoffman suffered very serious injuries to her liver, spine, and ribs, according to Channel 3.
This was a horrendous and unexpected accident that devastated a young family. The news report suggested there are seven members of the family and the accident will cause severe financial hardship.
Every week in Hampton Roads lives are lost and impacted by the careless and reckless actions of drivers. Cyclists and motorcyclists are particularly vulnerable.
As the father of a young family living in Virginia Beach, it saddens me that drivers can be so careless about mothers and children, be they cyclists, pedestrians or other road users.
Channel 3 reported a GoFundMe Page and YouCaring Page have been set up to help the Hoffman family.
According to media reports, police believe speed may have been a factor in this crash.
