Reckless Driving Accidents Led to Two Big Pay Outs in Virginia

In two recent cases, a driver’s reckless disregard for the rules of the road left another person severely injured. In Fairfax, Virginia a man drifted past a double yellow line into oncoming traffic and hit the plaintiff’s vehicle head on. The plaintiff suffered a dislocated hip and a comminuted fracture of his acetabulum where the head of the femur meets with the pelvic bone. The injuries to the plaintiff were widespread throughout his pelvic region and required a five-hour surgery to help repair the damage and implant 21 screws. In fact, 3D animations were used to create a realistic model of the damage, which showed the true scope of the injuries.
When the accident occurred, the plaintiff was employed at a well paying, but physically demanding job, reported Virginia Lawyers Weekly. Surprisingly, he was able to return to work after a strenuous rehabilitation period. However, the stresses of work only exacerbated the problems and he forced into an early retirement.
Through the work of Fairfax attorney Michael Shevlin, the plaintiff received compensation amounting to $1.175 million, due to the severity of the injury, the loss of future wages, and the cost an estimated three additional surgeries that will be needed in the future.
In another case, this time in Spotsylvania County, the defendant ran a red light, ignoring the inherent danger in making such a bold decision, and T-boned the plaintiff’s vehicle. The plaintiff suffered a huge list of injuries and complications from the accident including a concussion, a fractured tibia and fibula, a pulmonary contusion, intracranial hemorrhaging, chronic anemia from continued blood loss, and the loss of 17 percent of his left leg functionality.
The attorney for the plaintiff, John Whittington of Manassas, settled the case for $500,000, according to a June 29, 2015 issue of the Virginia Lawyers Weekly publication, arguing that this was a just compensation for over $150,000 in total medical costs, the loss of wages, and the permanent loss of a certain quality of life due to the leg impairment.
