John Cooper of Cooper Hurley Speaks At Virginia Beach Bar Association Seminar
Injury lawyer John Cooper organized and spoke at a recent Virginia Beach Bar Association seminar on personal injury.
John is a partner with the Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers. His partner Jim Hurley also attended the event.
More than 100 people attended the event at the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Arts on September 26, which was intended to examine personal injury law from the perspective of the court, the defendant, the plaintiff and the insurance adjustor.
The panel represented these diverse perspectives on the topic of personal injury litigation.
They comprised the Hon. Glenn Croshaw, a Virginia Beach Circuit Judge, defense attorney Tim Brunick from Virginia Beach, Geico claims adjustor Kim Robinson and John.
They considered medical evidence at trials, case valuation, preservation and spoliation of evidence and corporate representative depositions.
In the discussion about medical evidence at trial John pointed out recent advances in presenting medical evidence at trial.
“One of the main things in a case that can force maximum settlements is to do things like use medical illustrations,” John Cooper said.
“You will find that the jury is really blown away by seeing this kind of imagery,” he said.
Sophisticated illustrations now incorporate not only art but also x-rays sustained by those who were hurt in accidents.
Judge Croshaw said judges would be wary of images that were overly graphic. However, he said the illustrations were often effective at clarifying the nature of an injury. He said he had seen tremendous success with the duplication of head injuries.
In a letter to John Cooper, Mary Kellam, treasurer of the Virginia Beach Bar Association wrote: “The presentations of the panelists were excellent, and a number of our members were very complimentary on the presentations, at the end of the seminar.”
