Hampton Roads’ Congested Highways : A Recipe For Disaster
I was born and raised here in the Norfolk/Virginia Beach area. As I drive around to go to court as a personal injury attorney or taking my kids to sporting events, I am amazed at how bad the highways have become in terms of so many traffic jams, accidents and just too many cars and trucks for the amount of roadway. We all know the trouble spots whether it’s the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel on Interstate 64 (I-64) from Hampton to Norfolk or the bottleneck that occurs at the intersection of Interstate 264 and I-64 where Norfolk, Virginia Beach and Chesapeake meet. There are places where even when the traffic is as good as it can be it’s still a mess.
The problem is as we all go about our lives, whether commuting to work, going to the doctor or just riding to the beach, we have to be prepared for sudden slow-downs and braking for no reason as well as tie-ups that occur just because someone wasn’t paying attention and rear ended the car in front of them. The risk of a secondary accidents is especially high where after a first collision, the cars aren’t able to get far enough off of the highway, that somebody wipes out into the stopped cars and even the police or rescue workers on the side of the road dealing with the first collision.
Please be careful out there and keep the right amount of distance between you and the car in front of you, as following too close is probably the most common mistake that leads to highway collisions and injuries.
