Four Injured in Six Car Wreck on Jefferson Avenue in Newport News
I was saddened to see the images of mangled cars and to read about more injuries on Jefferson Avenue in Newport News this morning where four people were hospitalized after a six-car crash.
The wreck was reported just after 7 a.m. at the intersection of Jefferson Avenue and Lee Street.
Pictures of the scene from Newport News Fire Department showed badly damaged cars and debris strewn across Jefferson Avenue. Fire crews noted they were working to free one of the motorists who was trapped.
Chief Steve Pincus of Newport News Fire Department later confirmed that two people were trapped in the accident and had to be rescued. Crews successfully freed them in 20 minutes.
The accident caused commuter chaos on the Peninsula where north and southbound lanes of Jefferson Avenue were closed temporarily while crews cleared up the scene. All lanes of traffic were reopened shortly after 9 a.m.
As well as the four people who were hospitalized after the wreck a firefighter suffered a minor back injury as he helped rescue one of the trapped motorists.
There is no word yet on the conditions of those who were hurt in this serious crash. Our thoughts are with the injured and we hope they make a speedy recovery.
