Driver is Charged With DUI Manslaughter After Death of Charles Stitt Sr in Newport News Home
Given all we know about the dangers of driving under the influence and drugs and alcohol, it still amazes me that we see so many deaths and injuries caused by DUIs.
I was saddened to see a driver was charged with DUI offenses over the weekend after she crashed into a home in Newport News, killing an elderly man and injuring his wife.
Newport News police said a 38-year-old woman crashed into a home in the 2200 block of Timberneck Lane in Kiln Creek just before 3:45 p.m. on May 27.
It’s hard to imagine the horror experienced by 75-year-old Charles Stitt Sr. and his 73-year-old wife. They were enjoying the Memorial Day holiday when suddenly a Nissan crashed into their kitchen. Mr. Stitt was seriously injured and later died.
My thoughts as a Newport News wrongful death attorney are with his family at this tragic time.
The driver who is from Newport News has been charged with DUI, DUI manslaughter, reckless driving and DUI maiming, the Daily Press reported.
When a life is lost in this manner family members may have clear grounds to bring a wrongful death lawsuit against a driver’s insurance policy.
Wrongful death damages will cover a number of areas related to the loss of a loved one, including:
- Medical expenses
- Funeral expenses
- Loss of the value of services to the family
The state of Virginia also allows drunk driving victims to recover punitive damages under some circumstances. In such a case damages go over and above those normally awarded. Contact a Newport News personal injury lawyer for a free consultation.
