Douglas and Angela Martin Lose Their Lives in Boating Accident on Chowan River in Gates County
When accidents occur on the water, they can be very serious. I was saddened to read about an accident near here in Gates County in which two boats collided on the Chowan River, killing a husband and a wife from Virginia.
Details are still emerging about this accident, but it appears that Douglas Martin, 42 and his wife Angela Martin, 35, lost their lives after a larger boat ran over the top of their fishing boat.
North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC) said the accident was a head-on collision between two vessels. The Martins were in a 16-foot bass boat that was hit by a 17-foot bass boat. The Martins were from Sedley which is in Southampton County in Virginia.
Investigators said two men were in the other boat. Lieutenant Mark Rich told ABC 13News that emergency dispatchers in Southampton County received a call about the collision around 2 p.m. Saturday. Crews from Southampton headed out to the river where it intersects the Nottoway and Blackwater Rivers. When they realized the accident had occurred on the North Carolina side of the state line, they contacted Gates County.
Rich told 13News Now it “took hours for NCWRC to reach the boats and to get them back to shore,” according to the report. The North Carolina State Medical Examiner’s Office will perform autopsies to determine how the Martins died.
As a personal injury lawyer who is licensed in Virginia and North Carolina, I deal with a lot of cases in which Virginians are injured or killed in North Carolina and vice versa. My thoughts are with family members of this couple in the wake of this terrible tragedy.
When people on boats or on the highway lose their lives, another party can often be at-fault. We don’t know the circumstances of this boating accident, but obviously something went terribly wrong on the water.
This month we are highlighting some of the dangers of boating in Virginia and North Carolina.
