Cooper Hurley Supports Clean Up of Knitting Mill Creek in Norfolk
Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers made a contribution this week to boost the restoration of a tributary to the Lafayette River in Norfolk that has suffered from poor water quality in recent years.
I was pleased to attend an event on Wednesday to mark the restoration of Knitting Mill Creek in Norfolk. The project is also receiving a big boost thanks to new federal money.
WVEC.com reported on how more than $60,000 is to be used to explore options to improve the creek’s water quality. EPA Regional Administrator Shawn M. Garvin detailed a number of options to stop polluted runoff from entering the waterway.
Capturing rainwater where it falls will help prevent it coming into contact with and green infrastructure practices such as porous pavements, rain gardens and green roofs will also help improve the quality of Knitting Mill Creek, a tributary of the Lafayette River in the Colonial Place neighborhood.
WVEC.com reported on how the tributary has experienced water quality problems from algal blooms, and elevated levels of E.coli bacteria.
“The findings at Knitting Mill Creek will become part of a national effort to combat the challenge of sea-level rise and we are proud to be a part of it,” said Norfolk Mayor Paul Fraim.
Since 2007, the Lafayette Wetlands Partnership started oversight of the wetlands restoration project and has worked to removed trash in the river as well as eradicating invasive species and putting native plants back where they belong.
Last year the Chesapeake Bay Foundation joined forces with volunteers to complete the Knitting Mill Creek Reef, which is composed of crushed concrete covered in spat on shell close to the Colley Avenue Bridge.
Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers support many good causes in the community. We recently supported the Elizabeth River Project’s RiverFest 2014 event as part of the ongoing improvement of the Lafayette River.
