Cooper Hurley Presents Check to Sugar Plum Bakery
At Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers we like to give back to the community and help great causes when we can. Today, I had the pleasure of awarding a check for $500 to Sugar Plum Bakery on Laskin Road in Virginia Beach.
Sugar Plum Bakery was the subject of our fall “Facebook” likes campaign. For every like on our Facebook page, we donate $1 up to $500.
Sugar Plum employs disabled people to make, package and sell its mouthwatering cakes and pastries.
The nonprofit has been doing a great job in promoting the integration of people with developmental disabilities into the workforce by providing jobs and training since 1987.
“We strive to increase community awareness of the worth of people with disabilities,” Executive Director Patricia Rakes Clark said in an interview at the start of the campaign.
“It is important to utilize the different skills of this often undervalued population into our lives. We have created a successful unique business model where people with developmental and intellectual disabilities successfully work in the integrated environment that is Sugar Plum Bakery,” she said.
Rakes Clark said the many people with disabilities it provides work to are the backbone of the bakery’s business.” They could be scooping cookies, stamping bags, making cupcakes, washing dishes or putting boxes together.
Cooper Hurley launched its ‘Facebook likes’ campaign this summer, although we have previously supported the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore. Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers supported ForKids in our Facebook ‘likes” campaign in the summer. In September, attorney Jim Hurley presented a check of $500 to staff at the Norfolk-based non-profit that supports homeless children.
Our winter ‘Facebook likes’ campaign is helping homeless people by supporting Blankets for the Homeless. The nonprofit was set up by Mariah Smith of Virginia Beach when she was just 17.
Every year, Cooper Hurley sponsors many community events and good causes such as the Larchmont RAT Race in Norfolk and the Norfolk and Portsmouth Bar Association Law Library. Contact Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers at (757) 455-0077.
