Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers Pays Tuition for Scholarship Winner

Graduation diploma

The COVID-19 pandemic has been devastating for many of us. As well as those who lost loved ones over the last year, the coronavirus has destroyed businesses and drained people of their hard-earned savings.

As a result of these tumultuous times, Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers stepped in to help one young student who was struggling to pay for tuition as the pandemic hit in 2020. Jackson Campbell was one of the winners of our Distracted Driving Awareness Scholarship in 2018. We paid for tuition for his spring semester at Regent University in Virginia Beach.

Jackson recently sent us a message of thanks. “Despite the many challenges associated with pursuing a degree amid a global pandemic, I’ve maintained a GPA of 3.4,” he wrote.

As he headed into his final semester, he thanked the attorneys and staff at Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers, describing their help as “an incredible blessing to me and my family.”

“After winning an essay contest during my first year at Regent, they kickstarted my education with a generous scholarship,” he wrote. “And now, venturing into my last semester, I carried a balance on my school account, which weighed heavily on my family’s heart. When the restrictions were enacted back in March due to COVID, my parents lost over $50,000 in income from their business. Yet taxes, bills, and tuition remained unwavering,” Jackson said.

“We are so very grateful to each of the partners at Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers and their amazing chief marketing officer (Cassidy Lewis) for believing in and supporting me. They surprised me with an announcement. They wanted to see my education come full circle. They boosted the beginning and now they are pushing me towards the finish line. They are granting me another scholarship to pay off my balance,” Jackson wrote.

Scholarship winner, Jackson Campbell is constantly on an adventure. Here he is on top of Humpback Rock in Shenandoah National Park.

“Because of their gracious generosity, they have relieved the financial burden for me and my family. Graduating in the spring debt-free allows me to focus on building my own non-profit enabling me to use my talents and resources to the glory of God. I pray I am able to bless others as they have poured into me.” He thanked Cassidy Lewis and partners Jim Hurley, John Cooper, Bill O’Mara, and Griff O’Hanlon.

Three students who submitted presentations about the dangers of distracted driving won scholarships worth $2,000 in 2018. They were Jackson, Audry Feltner, and Dyon Dixon. Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers has awarded scholarships to students who submit presentations on the dangers of distracted driving over the last few years.

Dangers of Distracted Driving

Teen drivers are often the victims of distracted driving. They are more inexperienced behind the wheel but can find it difficult to resist the temptation of reaching for their cell phones.

Research shows as many as 481,000 drivers use their cell phones while driving. It is an issue that creates enormous potential for deaths and injuries on our roads. Teens are the largest age group involved in fatal distracted driving crashes, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Distracted driving claims almost 3,000 lives every year on our highways. Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers have helped many people and organizations in the Hampton Roads community over the last few years.

We recently set up the Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers Cares campaign. We have supported organizations including Catholic Charities of Eastern Virginia, the Urban League, Blankets for the Homeless, the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore, the Elizabeth River Project, and United Way of Hampton Roads.

We believe we should give back to the community we live and work in. Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers has a main office in Norfolk with client meeting locations in all of the cities of Hampton Roads and on the Eastern Shore of Virginia.
