Child is Awarded $11.5 Million After Her Foot was Crushed by a Falling Sign During Virginia Fun Run
Few cases I deal with as an experienced Virginia Beach personal injury attorney are as upsetting as those involving injuries to children.
I was, therefore, saddened to read in Virginia Lawyers Weekly of a case related to a serious injury to a child during a fun run at the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia.
Fun runs are meant to be fun. Just a few months ago Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers was one of the sponsors at the Boo-Yah! 5 K event in Port Norfolk, Portsmouth.
Sadly the CNN Healthy Kids Fun Run on October 30, 2010, at the Pentagon took a tragic turn when a 16 foot high metal truss structure holding a 20-foot long banner, was blown over onto the foot of a 6-year-old girl, crushing it.
The girl needed 15 surgeries, but eventually required a Syme’s amputation, which involved the removal of her entire foot.
The Virginia Lawyers Weekly reported she will require a lifetime of prosthetic devices. Her past medical expenses had reached $600,000.
The case against CNN and the marketing company Civic Entertainment Group (CEG) was settled for just over $11.5 million. The attorneys for the plaintiff were Patrick M. Regan and Amy S. Gurgle.
All cases are different and no settlement or verdict is an indicator of future results.
If you are hurt while taking part in an event or on someone else’s premises, you should contact an experienced Virginia Beach premises liability attorney.
