One Passenger is Killed, Another is Seriously Injured as Charter Bus Overturns En Route to Hampton, VA
A tour bus on the way to Hampton, VA has overturned and crashed in Virginia, killing one person and seriously injuring another.
Virginia State Police were called to the accident at about 7:05 a.m. on April 5, at eastbound Route 58 at Route 652 in Capron, Virginia.
“A charter bus that was headed to Hampton, Virginia, from Chapel Hill, NC, lost control and ran off the right side of the road overturning in a ditch,” said Sgt. Michelle Anaya of Virginia State Police in a press release.
The bus was transporting eight passengers and the driver. Two passengers were ejected from the bus,” said police.
The man who died was identified as 58-year-old Doval Emmanuel Watson of Chapel Hill, North Carolina. My thoughts as a Virginia and North Carolina wrongful death lawyer are with his family.
Another passenger was flown to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. The deceased has been identified and notification has been made.
It’s unclear what caused the bus to crash. What we do know is the poor safety record of the tour bus industry. In 2011 four passengers were killed on the I-95 in Caroline County, VA, when a tour bus overturned. The bus driver Kin Yiu Cheung fell asleep at the wheel. He was convicted of four counts of involuntary manslaughter.
Federal agencies cracked down on tour buses in the wake of the crash and another crash that led to the loss of many lives in New York City. Driver fatigue was also the cause of the Bronx bus crash that killed 15.
