Speed is a factor in numerous fatal car accidents across the Tidewater area. Sadly, this appeared to be the case in Hampton on Saturday night when a car crash on North Mallory Street left one person dead.
According to a WAVY.com report police officers responded to the 1100 block of North Mallory Street at about 11 p.m. after receiving several calls about an auto accident. Police arrived at the scene and found a 1998 Ford Mustang that had struck a tree. A man in the car died at the accident scene.
Hampton Police said the preliminary investigation indicated a car was traveling north on North Mallory when it struck the tree.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation, according to police. WAVY reported it is believed that speed was a factor.
Single vehicle accidents are the most common type of wreck on the roads of the United States.
Higher speeds are more likely to result in a loss of control at the wheel leading to a serious accident. Speed also increases the severity of the impact when a collision occurs. See these facts about excess speed and driving.
