Route 13 on the Eastern Shore of Virginia is one of the most deadly highways in the state for crashes involving big rigs. I was saddened to read about how an Eastern Shore tractor-trailer crash has claimed the life of a box truck driver.
The crash occurred on Thursday morning. All lanes of Route 13 at Willow Oak Road in Northampton County were shut down as police investigated a fatal crash involving a box truck and a tractor-trailer. The crash was reported at 11:20 a.m. near Eastville.
A report on WAVY.com contained information from Eastville Police Sergeant Robert Stubbs. He said a Penske box truck and a tractor-trailer were involved in a collision on Route 13. The driver of the Penske truck was pronounced dead at the wreck scene. The driver of the tractor-trailer was airlifted to a local hospital for a non-life-threatening leg injury.
Images from the crash scene showed extensive damage to the Penske box truck. Our thoughts are with the family of the victim and the injured trucker after this fatal Eastern Shore tractor-trailer crash.
Northampton County Sheriff David L. Doughty, Jr. confirmed Virginia State Police and the Eastville Sheriff’s Office are in charge of the accident investigation.
Sadly, fatal tractor-trailer crashes occur far too often on the Eastern Shore of Virginia and Maryland. In some cases, a smaller vehicle emerges onto US 13 into the path of a big rig. In other cases, the trucker is to blame for deaths and injuries.
In 2015, five people died after a Virginia family’s car collided with a tractor-trailer in Queen Anne’s County in Maryland on the Eastern Shore.
Three adults, two children and an unborn child lost their lives on Route 50 in Wye Mills. The car and truck crashed at an intersection close to Chesapeake College. The truck rolled over the car before coming to a rest.
No fewer than 11 charges were brought against the trucker including reckless driving, driving a commercial vehicle in a condition likely to cause a crash, and driving a commercial vehicle with inoperative brakes on a combination vehicle, which contributed to a fatal crash.
In May 2018, the driver of a garbage truck lost control on Harmony Road on the Eastern Shore in Maryland and crossed a center line. The truck then struck a trailer being towed by a Chevrolet pickup truck, according to the police. Three people died in this wreck.
Eastern Shore Tractor-Trailer Crash Killed a Motorist on U.S. 13
Last year an Eastern Shore tractor-trailer crash left one person dead on U.S. 13 at Tasley in Virginia.
A woman driving a Ford F-150 pick-up turned into the path of a van causing a collision. The four people in the van tried to get out, but a tractor-trailer then crashed into the van before a 19-year-old passenger could escape. He was killed on impact. Virginia State Police later charged the driver of the pick-up truck with failure to yield right of way.
