The Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel that links Norfolk and Hampton via Interstate 64 is one the most congested crossings in south eastern Virginia, according to a recent report. It also sees a high number of crashes.
The report in the Virginian-Pilot is probably no surprise to harassed Hampton residents who commute to Norfolk or Virginia Beach every day.
But it highlights, once again, the link between congestion and crashes, a link my colleague, the Hampton auto accident attorney Jim Hurley, makes clear in a recent video.
Congestion Causes Aggressive driving in Hampton Roads – Norfolk injury lawyer Jim Hurley
The Pilot article stated in July, 2013 more than 4.76 million vehicles crossed the HRBT and the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel, as increase of more than 21,000 compared with the same time last year.
The other congested tunnels are those linking Norfolk to Portsmouth. At the Downtown and Midtown tunnels, there were 3.9 million crossings in July, a rise of more than 136,000 from July 2012.
The article points to a clear link between congestion and crashes. In June there were 19 crashes at the HRBT and 13 at the Monitor-Merrimac Bridge Tunnel.
But the 1-264 Downtown Tunnel registered the most crashes – 51 in June, 2013.
Other factors have added to the problems on Hampton Roads’ crossings. Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) noted 73 breakdowns in the Midtown Tunnel, 93 in at the HRBT and MMBT and 206 at the Downtown Tunnel.
Heavy rain has also been a regular menace during June and July, making driving conditions more hazardous.
