Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers Supports the Berkley Supermarket

Cooper Hurley team at community event

Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers recently joined forces with another law firm to support a popular store located in a former food desert in Hampton Roads.

The Berkley Supermarket opened in 2021. It provides a vital service to the residents of South Norfolk, an area that had a reputation for being a food desert before its arrival.

Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers was a co-sponsor of an event on Feb. 25 along with the Morring Law Firm. The firms partnered to give back to the community, providing more than $7,500 in Berkley Supermarket gift card donations to shoppers.

Our Norfolk-based personal injury lawyers have supported numerous great causes in the Hampton Roads community in recent years. We recognize the importance of stores in areas such as South Norfolk where many people struggle to make ends meet. The Berkley Supermarket on East Berkley Avenue gives residents access to fresh food on their doorsteps, negating the need to drive miles to big chain stores.

The market joined the Virginia Fresh Match network, allowing people who use the EBT card to buy fruit and vegetables at half price. The event included live music, swag bags, and giveaways.

The Berkley Supermarket is one of the few Black-owned grocery stores in the area. “I’ve seen a lot of our customers who appreciate what we did, knowing the fact that for almost three years they didn’t have the food option that they have now,” Berkley Supermarket owner Michael Palmer told WAVY 10. “Before now, they would shop at the convenience store.” Palmer described the Feb. 25 event as a “game changer.”

The event recognized the challenges facing the Berkley Supermarket. The store is seeking more customers to remain viable and to have a strong future in the Berkley community. We hope the event on Feb. 25 helped the store’s long-term viability.

Berkley is one of the most historic communities in Hampton Roads. Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers has previously helped churches and non-profits operating in the area.

Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers gives back thousands of dollars to great community organizations every month. Our car crash experts launched the Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers Cares campaign more than three years ago. Please contact us via our website or call us at (757) 333-3333 for more details.
