When drivers lose control of heavy tractor trailers, the consequences are often serious for other road users.
This proved to be the case for a young client of John Cooper of Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers, who saw a promising career in the Navy jeopardized by a split second mistake made by a truck driver in Newport News last year.
John recently secured a $550,000 settlement for the Navy employee who has been forced to come to terms with acute, life-changing injuries in the wake of the accident on November 17, 2012.
His client, who was 20 at the time of the crash, was driving a Chevrolet Cobalt on Interstate 64 in Newport News, when the driver of a tractor trailer lost control of his truck. He struck the sailor’s car, forcing him off the interstate where he crashed into a tree.
John’s client was transported to Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News for treatment of serious injuries including an acute colon perforation, an acute cervical sprain, acute splenic laceration, acute left lung contusion, acute right radial fracture and a host of other injuries.
He was transferred to Portsmouth Naval Medical Center two days later for treatment for a right radial styloid fracture in his hand and a right medial malleolus fracture in his ankle. He was discharged from the hospital in a wheelchair on November 23, 2012, and later readmitted to the hospital for further treatment on the fractures.
He underwent physical therapy well into 2013 when he was finding it hard to climb stairs without experiencing pain. He may need additional surgery in the future to remove hardware in his ankle.
The accident meant the sailor was transferred to a different unit and may not be reenlisted, potentially removing his dream of a career in the Navy.
John Cooper has represented many people who have been seriously injured by trucks in Virginia and further afield as well as family members of those who have been killed in truck wrecks. In 2012 John Cooper and his colleague Jim Hurley secured a $5 million settlement for a woman from Hampton who was severely injured by a construction truck in Gloucester County, VA.
He has also litigated a $3.5 million settlement for the son of a man who lost his life in a fiery wreck caused by a truck on I-64 in Norfolk. All cases are different. While we will work tirelessly on your behalf to get the best verdict or settlement, we cannot guarantee the same result.
