Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers Supports the MacArthur Foundation

The MacArthur Foundation has been in existence since 1962. It keeps alive the memory of General Douglas MacArthur whose presence looms as large as his burial place in Norfolk.

Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers is happy to again support this great cause. We recently presented a check for $500 to the Foundation.

The MacArthur Foundation was set up in 1962, to commemorate the life and achievements of General Douglas MacArthur, relating to his credo “Duty, Honor, Country” and its relevance to future generations of Americans.

General MacArthur is famous for his exploits during World War Two, including his courageous defense of the Philippines against the Japanese and his eventual recapturing of the bitterly-contested islands.

MacArthur commanded the Southwest Pacific during the conflict. He presided over the Allied occupation of postwar Japan and led United Nations forces in the Korean War in 1950.

He was a larger-than-life, controversial figure. He was removed from command by President Truman in 1951. MacArthur asked the president for permission to bomb communist China and use Nationalist Chinese forces from Taiwan against the People’s Republic of China.Truman declined the request and Truman removed MacArthur from his command for insubordination on April 11, 1951.

The foundation supports many good causes in the Hampton Roads community and beyond. It raised money for the bronze statue of the General that now stands outside the memorial complex where MacArthur is buried.

The Jean MacArthur Research Center contains the MacArthur Papers, the General’s personal library, and the classrooms that support an education program. The theater contains more displays and shows a film about the General’s life. The Foundation provided $1.1 million for the expansion of the theater and research center.

The non-profit also grants leadership awards to members of the U.S. Army, presents writing awards to the Army Command and the General Staff College.

In 2017, Cooper Hurley partner John Cooper presented a check to the Foundation’s Executive Director Colonel William Davis.

He described the MacArthur Memorial and the Foundation as something that “makes Norfolk great.”

Executive Director Colonel William Davis said the foundation buildings are an important part of downtown Norfolk.

“Not only do we have museum services but we also conduct educational programs and we have a working archive and library that’s used by students, scholars and families of veterans,” he said.

Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers supports many great causes in the Hampton Roads community including Blankets for the Homeless, the SPCA, and the Food Bank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore.
