Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers Supports Portsmouth Homeless at Community Day

NORFOLK, VA —December 29, 2022: Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers has built a reputation for helping out the community of Hampton Roads during tough times.

On October 26, the firm held its first Community Day to support a charity for homelessness based in Portsmouth.

The Norfolk-based personal injury law firm donated 200 “cares bags’ to Portsmouth Volunteers for the Homeless. The nonprofit is donating the bags to people in need in the local community this winter.

Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers closed its Norfolk office at 2 p.m. to allow employees to stuff the bags with essentials including toothbrushes, toothpaste, socks, hats, gloves, ponchos, blankets, hand sanitizer, and deodorant, along with a card that lists local resources to assist homeless people. Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers also donated $250 to Portsmouth Volunteers for the Homeless.

Portsmouth Volunteers for the Homeless was founded in 1990, according to the Hampton Roads Community Foundation.  The leaders and congregations of churches in downtown Portsmouth were disheartened to see homeless people sleeping outside in freezing conditions.

Trinity Episcopal Church, First Presbyterian Church, St. John’s Episcopal Church, and Monumental United Methodist Church pioneered the idea of church-based winter sheltering in Portsmouth. They were later joined by St. Paul’s Catholic Church. The group incorporated Portsmouth Volunteers for the Homeless in 1996.

“Its mission is to be the primary provider of emergency shelter for people who need homes and to help them become self-sufficient through supportive services in cooperation with other local organizations. It is a Black-led nonprofit that received funding through the community foundation’s Black Community Partnership Fund,” the website states.

Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers consistently gives back to the community it represents after car, truck, and motorcycle accidents and other injury scenarios. The law firm launched the Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers Cares initiative in 2019, which donates money to local schools, non-profits, and deserving people who are working to uplift and empower young people in Hampton Roads.

Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers is on course to hand out more than $100,000 in support to Hampton Roads organizations in 2022 via initiatives including Vote for a Cause, Vote for a School, and its Focused Driver Scholarship Program. The firm is likely to hold more community days following the success of its first event.
