Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers’ 2024 ‘Vote for a School’ Contest Engages Over 4,000 Community Members, Distributing $15,000 to Hampton Roads Schools

NORFOLK, VA — October 18th, 2024: Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers is proud to announce that more than 4,000 Hampton Roads residents have voted in this year’s Vote for a School contest, leading to a $10,000 award for Portsmouth Catholic Regional School.

Portsmouth Catholic Regional School rallied their community and secured the top prize from the Norfolk-based personal injury law firm in October, following a close voting period that kept our community on the edge of their seats.

Attorney Griff O’Hanlon, Partner at Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers, joined Donna Henry, principal at Portsmouth Catholic, on WTKR’s Coast Live this October to reveal the results of this annual initiative.

During the broadcast, Principal Henry shared exciting plans for the donation, which will go to various needs within their school, including transportation for field trips and new electronics for students.

“This funding is going to provide remarkable experiences for our students and much-needed resources for our teachers,” Principal Henry said after a surprise pep rally where Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers announced the good news to the student body and staff.

“This donation is so much more than the money for us. We count on our community for their time, their heart, and their treasure.” Principal Henry told Attorney Bill O’Mara during the event. “This act of kindness reflects the strength of our community, and we appreciate it more than words can express.”

When asked what she would say to the community members who supported the school, Principal Henry replied, “Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Our school is like a family, and this victory belongs to everyone who took the time to vote. If I could personally thank each of you, I would.”

Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers also presented a $3,333 donation to Pembroke Meadows Elementary in Virginia Beach, and a $2,000 donation to Hillpoint Elementary in Suffolk for their impressive second and third place finishes.

“Giving back to our community is at the core of what we do as a law firm,” said Griff O’Hanlon during the Coast Live segment with Principal Henry “Supporting our local schools is one of the best parts of my job,” he added.

The Vote for a School contest is one of many community-focused initiatives under the Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers’ Cares program, the philanthropic arm of the firm created for the purpose of supporting students and educators across Hampton Roads.

Open to all public and private schools in Hampton Roads and the Eastern Shore of Virginia, this year’s contest ran from August 27 to October 15, 2024. Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers pledged a total of $15,000 in awards to the top three schools that garnered the most votes.

Over the past decade, the firm has made substantial contributions to schools and students throughout Hampton Roads. Most recently, Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers purchased the Amazon Classroom wish list of one teacher in each of the 7 cities to help get their school year off to a good start.

In addition to the Vote for a School contest, Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers also hosts the Vote for a Cause contest each spring, which celebrates local nonprofits and other worthy organizations in Hampton Roads. In 2024, Norfolk-based Reck League received $10,000 as the winner of the Vote for a Cause contest.

These initiatives, along with the firm’s other charitable efforts, reflect Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers’ ongoing commitment to giving back to Hampton Roads as a way of showing appreciation for the community’s continued support.
