NORFOLK, VA — June 25, 2022: A Suffolk wildlife refuge has again won first place in Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers’ Vote for a Cause contest after the public cast their ballots for Hampton Roads’ favorite non-profit.
Eveyln’s Wildlife Refuge won Vote for a Cause in 2020. It scooped the award again in 2022, the Norfolk-based personal injury law firm announced.
Cassidy Lewis, Chief Marketing Officer of Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers, presented refuge staff with a check for $5,000 in May. The refuge provides shelter and care to sick, injured, and orphaned wildlife native to Virginia.
Meredith Broadhurst, the president of Evelyn’s Wildlife Refuge, said the nonprofit has formed a community with other wildlife organizations in Tidewater.
“We’ve formed this huge wildlife community and we’ve brought in the public to help,” she said. “We’ve got them helping us with transporting and helping us with rescue. We’ve got them helping us with education, to teach the public how to peacefully coexist with the wildlife.”
Broadhurst said Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers’ donation would help fund vital supplies like formula for the animals. The charity spends up to $10,000 a year on formula.
Eveyln’s Wildlife Refuge has also stepped up its rehabilitation effort to take more animals into care.
Staff from the nonprofit arrived at Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers’ main office in downtown Norfolk with Hot Rod, a possum who was recovered from the top of a trash can in Norfolk after he was hit in the head with a log, rendering him blind. “After we realized he was blind we decided to make him an educational ambassador,” Broadhurst explained.
Pandas Fight Against Cancer won second place in Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers’ Vote for a Cause contest. The organization received a check for $3,000.
The nonprofit supports families of cancer sufferers and medical professionals.
For six consecutive weeks during COVID-19, Pandas Fight Against Cancer provided masks to frontline employees of the hematology and oncology departments at Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters (CHKD) as well as donated children’s masks. The nonprofit has provided masks to the VOA (Virginia Oncology Associates) in Norfolk and Virginia Beach.
The Hampton Roads-based organization sells merchandise to generate money for the families of cancer sufferers.
The third most popular cause was Stop The Violence 757. Portsmouth resident Monica Atkins set up the nonprofit after she lost her son to gun violence in the city in 2014.
The organization’s focus is to share awareness of the gun violence that is plaguing Hampton Roads and other cities and to be a voice for parents of victims who have been voiceless in the past. Stop The Violence 757 received $2,000 from Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers.
Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers has donated thousands of dollars to deserving causes in the Hampton Roads community in recent years. The personal injury law firm makes significant donations to non-profits, places of worship, schools, and others. Vote for a Cause has grown in scope and more money has been awarded to top causes over the last three years. Last year, Billy the Kidden Rescue, a Virginia Beach animal charity, won the poll.
The firm launched its Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers Cares campaign in 2019 and will distribute $100,000 in charitable contributions in 2022. We are happy to support these great causes that improve the lives of people and our furry friends.
