NORFOLK, VA —November 17, 2022: Norfolk-based Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers has been a regular supporter of the Legal Aid Society of Eastern Virginia over the last decade. The Car Crash Experts marked the importance of the society to the residents of Virginia this November when the firm donated $5,000.
Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers’ founding partner Jim Hurley presented a check of $5,000 to Ray Hartz, the Executive Director of the Legal Aid Society of Eastern Virginia, on November 7.
The donation is the largest the Hampton Roads personal injury firm has made to date to the Legal Aid Society. Since 2012, Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers has donated nearly $20,000 to the Norfolk-based nonprofit that provides legal assistance to people who cannot afford attorneys.
Demand for the services of the Legal Aid Society, which has offices in Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Hampton, Williamsburg, and Belle Haven, has soared in the wake of the devastating COVID-19 pandemic during a time of high inflation.
The Legal Aid Society of Eastern Virginia has provided free legal services to low-income households ever since its inception in 1966. People living in poverty often struggle to afford legal services and are more vulnerable to exploitation by landlords and others in the community. They often are unsure where to turn if they suffer from domestic abuse, family turmoil, or other unexpected setbacks.
“The Legal Aid Society of Eastern Virginia has provided a vital service to our community for decades,” Jim Hurley said. “Without it, vulnerable people would slip through the legal safety net. We are happy to once again support this great organization.”
“We desperately need the help of the community,” executive director Ray Hartz commented during a previous check donation from Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers. “We had our funding cut by over a third a few years ago during the years of the recession. While we have had some increases, we are nowhere near where we were five or 10 years ago. We have relied on the community to keep us going.”
The society’s work includes helping victims of domestic violence and their children as well as people who are hit hard by evictions or unfair loans.
“In a variety of civil matters we provide free lawyers so that people are treated fairly in the courts here in Virginia,” Hartz said.
Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers supports dozens of great causes throughout Hampton Roads every year. In 2019, the firm launched Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers Cares, its ongoing charitable initiative to meet the needs of local residents, schools, and charities. As of November, it has surpassed its goal of donating $100,000 to Hampton Roads in 2022.
