Symptoms After a Concussion After a Car Accident

Post-concussion syndrome refers to symptoms experienced after a concussion. People who suffered a concussion in a Virginia car accident may suffer for weeks or months after the crash. Headaches, poor sleep, and mood swings are common. This is a complicated and little-understood injury.

Head injuries are among the most complex potential consequences of a car, truck, or motorcycle accident in Virginia. People who suffer traumatic brain injuries are often unaware initially that a blow to the head caused their condition. They may not easily come to terms with the long-term consequences of a traumatic brain injury.

If symptoms persist weeks or months after an accident, contact your medical provider again and talk to an experienced Virginia brain injury lawyer.

When Does a Car Accident Cause Concussion?

Concussion is caused by a bump, jolt, or a blow to the head. It is also caused by a hit to the body that causes the head and brain to move rapidly back and forth. A sudden impact can cause the brain to bounce around or twist within the skull. A car accident can cause chemical changes in the brain or the loss of cells.

Concussion occurs more often than people realize in a car crash. This is classified as a mild traumatic brain injury. This name is misleading because the consequences of a concussion can be serious.

In Brain Injury Awareness Month, we are highlighting the implications of traumatic brain injuries on sufferers.

Some people believe they have to lose consciousness to suffer a concussion. This is not true. You can suffer a concussion and know little about it. You can suffer effects linked to the injury a long time after the car crash.

What Are The Signs of Post-Concussion Syndrome After a Virginia Car Accident?

People who suffer post-concussion syndrome may suffer a wide range of symptoms including:

  • Tiredness;
  • Anger and irritability;
  • Dizziness;
  • Nausea;
  • Anxiety and nervousness;
  • Poor sleep;
  • Headaches;
  • Memory loss and poor concentration;
  • Ringing in the ears;
  • Sensitivity to light and noises;
  • Depression and withdrawal.

Is Post-Concussion Syndrome Linked to the Seriousness of the Injury?

Research suggests little link between post-concussion syndrome and the seriousness of the injury. You may suffer a light blow to the head and still experience symptoms after the concussion.

According to Brainline, researchers have not established why some people develop post-concussion syndrome after an accident and others don’t. There is no established connection between the severity of the injury itself and the likelihood of developing persistent post-concussion symptoms in the days, weeks, and months after the crash.

Typically, symptoms occur within the first seven to 10 days after your injury and go away within three months. On occasions, they can persist for a year or more.

What Do Post-Concussion Headaches Feel Like?

Post-concussion headaches can feel like migraines or like tension-type headaches. If these headaches persist, see your medical provider. A neck injury such as whiplash caused by a car crash can also cause headaches.

Always see your doctor if you experience a head injury serious enough to cause confusion or memory loss — even if you never lost consciousness.

How to Safeguard Against Concussion in a Car Crash

The only proven way to prevent post-concussion syndrome is to avoid the head injury that caused the concussion in the first place.

When you are a driver or a passenger in a car, always wear your seat belt. This can restrict movement during impact and prevent ejection during a car wreck.

If you are riding a motorcycle or on a bike, always wear a helmet. It’s the law to wear a motorcycle helmet in Virginia. Adults are not required to wear bicycle helmets. We strongly recommend that you do.
