What Is The United States Railroad Retirement Board?
The United States Railroad Retirement Board is a government entity that administers benefits for railroad workers. It is somewhat like the Social Security Administration for railroad workers. The United States Railroad Retirement Board (is sometimes called the “RRB”) is not the railroad itself but rather is a separate administrative entity.
When a railroad worker gets hurt on the job they can sometimes get benefits through the Retirement Board. The RRB benefits typically have to be paid back if the railroad worker successfully makes a claim against the railroad under FELA. The RRB benefits are not unlimited but provide a certain amount of minimum support for the railroad worker and his family if he gets hurt on the job.
In my 20 years of doing railroad injury cases for railroad workers on Norfolk Southern and CSX I have learned a lot about dealing with the RRB. Generally, it is a pretty well-run entity.
I generally advise people to simply call the RRB if they have any questions about their benefits. However, if I’m representing you in your FELA I also help you to deal with them if there’s a particular question or concern.
