NORFOLK, VA — March 22, 2022: Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers has a long track record of helping students in the Hampton Roads community. The firm recently donated $1,000 to the Suffolk Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated’s J13 Scholarship Fund.

Cassidy Lewis, Chief Marketing Officer of Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers, visited Nansemond River High School in Suffolk to present a check to Tina Paul, President of the Suffolk Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. The donation was made during Black History Month.

Cassidy pointed out that Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers is donating $100,000 to good causes in Hampton Roads this year. “We have a special focus on education and youth-based initiatives,” she explained.

Paul pointed out the chapter started its scholarship in honor of its Founder’s Day on January 13. The chapter awards Suffolk high school students scholarships every year.

“We are honored to receive this donation,” Paul said. She described how Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated’s first national act of public service took place in 1913 with women’s suffrage rights. “We have continued in that path with so many members of our seniority holding political office whether it’s local, federal, national, and so forth,” she added.

The chapter also protects voting rights and helps ensure citizens are able to vote.

Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers is offering students its own scholarships again this year. Eligible students may receive scholarships of $2,000 each through our Focused Driver Scholarship Program.

The Norfolk-based personal injury law firm is well aware of the challenges students have faced during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Last year, the firm donated $2,000 to the Suffolk Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated to support the chapter’s J13 scholarship program, which awards Suffolk high school seniors scholarships for books, tuition, and other vital college expenses.

The Suffolk chapter was founded in 1964. It has been offering scholarships for over three decades. Members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated in Suffolk faced traveling to Norfolk, Portsmouth, or even Petersburg in the 1950s if they wanted to remain active in Delta. They set up their own chapter to benefit service projects in the Suffolk area.

The chapter participates in a wide range of economic development programs including educational programs, goal planning and debt management, as well as physical and mental health initiatives. Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers has helped scores of students in the Tidewater area during the pandemic, a stressful period for many young people. In 2021, the firm donated $500 to Nansemond River High School to buy safety equipment that helped keep students and staff safe as they returned to classrooms.

Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers donated $5,000 to the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore. The money helped young people in Hampton Roads receive the food they required during the pandemic.
