Police Probe Fatal I-495 Beltway Crash
The Beltway around Washington DC is a congested and dangerous highway that sees many accidents every month. We were saddened to read about a fatal I-495 Beltway crash this week.
The wreck occurred on the Northern Virginia Beltway, according to the Fairfax News.
Virginia State Police said in a press release a Nissan Maxima was stopped in one of the westbound lanes of Interstate 495. At about 5 a.m., a westbound pickup truck slammed into the Nissan Maxima.
The driver of the Nissan was able to escape from her damaged vehicle, and was then struck by another oncoming westbound car. She suffered critical injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. Another person who was involved in the accident was transported to a nearby hospital.
Authorities say the crash blocked the westbound travel lanes of I-495 for four hours. Drivers who were unable to exit the highway were forced to wait until the road was clear. Virginia State Police say that the cause of the crash is still under investigation.
We are saddened to hear about this fatal I-495 beltway crash and our thoughts are with the family of the deceased. If you break down on a fast-moving interstate you are in a precarious situation. However, other drivers are under an obligation to look out for stricken cars, trucks, and motorcycles. Last year, two young girls died on I-264 in Virginia Beach close to Rosemont Road. Their broken-down car was hit by a pickup truck.
If you’ve been involved in a car accident, it can be a scary and stressful situation. You should put on your emergency flashers and only exit your car if no other vehicles are heading toward you. Read our blog about what to do after an auto accident.
A loss of life is always tragic for all concerned. Far too many people who exit broken down cars are struck by drivers who fail to notice them or to slow down in time. Every year, we represent the families of dozens of people who have lost a relative in wrongful death lawsuits.
