Pickup Truck Hits a State Trooper on I-64 in Newport News
Another state police cruiser has been involved in an accident in Virginia, causing injuries to two state troopers.
Virginia State Police reported a multi-vehicle accident involving a VSP cruiser on Interstate 64 just east of Jefferson Avenue in Newport News on Wednesday . Two lanes of westbound I-64, were shut down after the crash.
Sergeant Michelle Anaya, a spokeswoman with Virginia State Police, said a VSP cruiser was responding to a traffic incident when a pickup truck crashed into the back of the cruiser, pushing it into a barrier. A third vehicle then hit the front passenger side of the cruiser.
Anaya reported there were two troopers inside the police cruiser. Both troopers of them were transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. No details of charges have yet been released by Virginia State Police.
This accident occurred just days after a trooper was injured when his cruiser was rea-ended in Sussex County. He was injured after he was trying to make a traffic stop on Route 460 west near the Sussex/Prince George Co. line, said Anaya.
The injured trooper was taken to the hospital for treatment and should make a recovery. The other driver was treated at the scene, said Sgt. Michelle Anaya. That crash is also under investigation.
In a blog last week I highlighted the “move over law” in Virginia which was enacted to protect emergency workers.
Troopers, paramedics, firefighters and tow truck drivers face danger on a daily basis on our roads. The law is intended to protect them when they are working on the highways. Unfortunately, drivers to continue to flout it on a daily basis by driving too fast past emergency workers and failing to give them the space they need to do their jobs. Fast-moving Interstates such as I-64 in Newport News, are particularly hazardous for emergency workers. If you have been injured due to the fault of another driver, you may have grounds to file a claim against his or her insurance policy.
