Passenger Humberto Gutierrez-Fuentevilla is killed in Isle of Wight, VA Wreck
A crash at an intersection in the Isle of Wight has claimed the life of the passenger in a van.
Virginia State Police responded to the scene of a two-vehicle crash at on November 10, 2013 at the intersection of Carrollton Boulevard and Sugar Hill Road in Isle of Wight County.
NewsChannel 3 reported a 2005 Dodge pickup truck was driving west on Sugar Hill Road. It crossed the intersection at Route 17 where it pulled into the path of a northbound 1197 Plymouth van.
“The van was not able to avoid the pickup truck and both vehicles collided in the intersection. The impact forced the pickup truck into a utility pole,” reported NewsChannel 3.
The station reported the van driver Mayra Lopez-Contreras, 33, of Suffolk, was transported to Bayview Hospital in Suffolk for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
Her four-year-old son was treated for minor injuries at the same hospital. Two other passengers who were travelling in the van were transported to Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News for treatment of serious injuries. Humberto Gutierrez-Fuentevilla, 56, of Suffolk, VA, later died at the hospital. Gloria Perez, 39, is still being treated at the hospital.
The driver of the pickup was subsequently charged with reckless driving. It’s not clear what caused the accident but alcohol is not considered to be a factor.
My thoughts as a Suffolk car accident injury lawyer are with the family of the deceased. This passenger was killed due to no fault of his own. His family has a good case to sue the insurance company of the driver who caused the accident. No amount of money can make up for a life lost but it can help a family during a tragic and financially tough time in their lives.
