Passenger and Driver Critically Injured on Mercury Boulevard in Newport News

I was saddened to read about a wreck this morning in Newport News that left a passenger and a driver critically injured when a car crashed into a light pole.
Newport News police reported this accident on Mercury Boulevard just before 10.30 a.m. on Wednesday morning. Mercury Boulevard is a fast-moving urban highway that sees many wrecks.
Police say a white Nissan Altima crashed into a light pole. The impact left a 22-year-old passenger in a serious condition. She was extracted from the wreckage of the Nissan and flown by Nightingale helicopter to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
Both the passenger and the 29-year-old man who drove the car were reported to be in a critical condition. The man was taken to a local hospital by ambulance. The Newport News Police Department crash team is investigating this serious wreck.
Our thoughts are with those involved in this serious wreck. Police said Mercury Boulevard was initially shut down around Newmarket Drive North as police cleared up the accident.
Single vehicle accidents are the most common kinds of wrecks on the highways of Virginia. Often a driver loses control and a car hits trees or another obstacle with serious consequences.
Passengers who are hurt in single-vehicle wrecks often have grounds to file a claim against the insurance company of the driver. Some people are reticent to do this because the driver may be a friend or a family member. However, it’s vital that you recover as much as you can for the treatment of very serious injuries.
A third critical injury was reported in Hampton Roads this morning when a pedestrian was hit by a pickup truck in Virginia Beach.
A report on WAVY.com said a preliminary police investigation indicated a man stepped into the roadway, and into the path of the pickup. The driver of the truck remained at the scene and helped the pedestrian.
The man who was hit by the pickup was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. The accident occurred on General Booth Blvd. just off Dam Neck Road.
We urge drivers to be careful on the fast-moving highways of Hampton Roads. Often drivers are traveling too quickly for the conditions and lose control of their vehicles. Just one small error can cause a serious wreck.
