Norfolk Car Accident Injury Attorney Report – Report Finds Road Deaths Rise on Tax Day
As experienced Norfolk, VA car accident injury attorneys we have reported in the past about how deaths spike on the roads of Virginia over certain holidays such as Thanksgiving and New Year.
But, according to a new study, deadly auto accidents also increase on Tax Day.
The increase in road fatalities on Tax Day was highlighted in a University of Toronto study, the Associated Press reported.
“Drivers recklessly racing to the post office to meet the deadline might be one reason. Or it could be that stressing over taxes distracts motorists and contributes to human error,” AP reported.
The University of Toronto researchers examined three decades of figures and found there were 6,783 traffic-related deaths on Tax Day, or 226 per day. The figure compared with 213 a day on the day a week before the deadline day and a day a week after.
While the increase in road deaths on holidays such as Thanksgiving are often linked to increased alcohol consumption, it’s more difficult to explain this spike on the day of the deadline for filing taxes.
Russ Rader of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, told AP the figure may be linked to more drivers on the road who are taking routes “that are not in their everyday routines.”
The deadline for filing taxes is usually April 15. This year it has been put back to April 17. That’s because April 15 is a Sunday while the following day is Emancipation Day, which is a public holiday in Washington DC. As Norfolk, VA auto accident injury lawyers we urge drivers to take care on the roads on Tax Day.
