Norfolk and Virginia Beach Injury Lawyer Jim Hurley Receives top AV Rating from Martindale-Hubbell

Jim Hurley of Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers has received the highest category of rating, the Preeminent rating, in Martindale-Hubbell’s exclusive peer review lawyer rating system.
Under the Martindale-Hubbell attorney reputation assessment system, lawyers are evaluated on their skill and ethics by their peers. It’s one of the oldest and best known evaluations in the U.S. legal profession.
Jim’s partner at the Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers, John Cooper, has had a top rating of “AV” since 2004. Cooper Hurley has an office in Norfolk, VA and client meeting centers in Virginia Beach and Hampton.
Martindale-Hubbell evaluates law firms and attorneys in both the U.S. and Canada in a peer review process that’s independent and rigorous. It sends confidential questionnaires to fellow lawyers and judges within the same area or practice area as the attorney or law firm being evaluated.
According to the Martindale-Hubbell website, the ratings “reflect a combination of achieving a very high general ethical standards rating and a legal ability numerical rating. A threshold number of responses is required to achieve a rating.”
Legal Ability ratings are based on performance in five important areas, rated on a scale of 1 to 5 (with 1 being the lowest and 5 being the highest). These areas are:
- Legal Knowledge – Lawyer’s familiarity with the laws governing his/her specific area of practice(s)
- Analytical Capabilities – Lawyer’s creativity in analyzing legal issues and applying technical knowledge
- Judgment – Lawyer’s demonstration of the salient factors that drive the outcome of a given case or issue.
- Communication Ability – Lawyer’s capability to communicate persuasively and credibly
- Legal Experience – An attorney’s degree of experience in his/her specific area of practice(s)
Martindale-Hubbell Ratings were created in 1887 as an objective tool that would test a lawyer or law firm’s ability and professional ethics, based on the confidential opinions of other lawyers and judges.
Jim Hurley’s 4.6 AV rating reflects, among other things, his considerable experience and expertise in injury law.
He graduated from Thomas M. Cooley Law School in Lansing, Michigan in 1990 where he received his degree Cum Laude and finished 10th in his class of 143 students.
He has practiced law since 1991. Since 1993, he has helped injured victims of motor vehicle accidents and other personal injury cases, secure the compensation they need to make a full recovery.
