Man Seriously Injured In Chesapeake Farm Equipment Accident
I was saddened to hear about how a man was seriously injured in a Chesapeake farm equipment accident on Saturday morning.
A report on WAVY.com noted the 64-year-old victim was airlifted to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital after he was involved in an accident involving farm equipment.
Police closed down all lanes of traffic in the 4000 block of Old Battlefield Boulevard for hours after 10 a.m. following the incident.
Chesapeake Fire Captain Steve Bradley said the victim sustained potentially serious injuries but few details of the circumstances of this accident were released.
Farm equipment accidents may be very serious when they occur. Although much of Hampton Roads is urban in nature, countryside remains in southern Chesapeake, Suffolk and parts of Virginia Beach.
Accidents involving farm equipment are often very serious and tragic. When farm equipment is on public roadways it can cause many problems. It is slow and may lack proper safety equipment like reflectors.
Often drivers who are held up behind slow-moving items of farm machinery become frustrated. They overtake without taking adequate precautions and are involved in head-on collisions.
Drivers of tractors may be liable if they stop in the road or make turns without looking out for other motorists.
A study in North Carolina found farm equipment operators in accidents suffer more fatalities and injuries than other drivers. Farm equipment accidents are more common in the spring and summer when there is more activity in the fields. They are more likely to occur in clear weather in open county during daylight hours. Farm equipment involved in accidents on public highways is more likely to lack adequate lighting equipment than other vehicles involved in farm equipment crashes.
Farms are inherently dangerous places. In some cases, farm workers have suffered appalling injuries from threshing machines or fell into grain silos. Tractors overturning and entanglement accidents are among the most common types of injury on the farm.
Farm equipment operators involved in accidents are predominantly male. Operators of farm equipment are usually older than the drivers of other vehicles.
Our thoughts are with the man who was airlifted after this serious accident in Chesapeake. We hope he makes a good recovery.
