Man, 60 is Hit and Killed by a Police Cruiser in Portsmouth

I was disturbed to read about how a pedestrian was knocked down and killed by a police cruiser on Portsmouth Boulevard in Portsmouth earlier this evening.
Details are still coming in on the news media but it appears that the man who was killed was 60-years-old and from Sri Lanka and that the police cruiser was not attending an incident and did not have its flashing lights on.
WAVY.com reported the comments of Portsmouth Police spokeswoman Misty Holley who said the man was struck at the intersection of Portsmouth Boulevard and Woodstock Street, receiving fatal injuries.
Holley confirmed the police officer was not responding to an emergency call and his car’s lights and siren were not activated at the time of the crash. There has been no further information about how this tragic accident occurred. My thoughts as a personal injury lawyer who works with many people who have been injured in Portsmouth, are with the family of this victim.
Police officers have a duty to drive with care and must activate their emergency lights and sirens if they are attending an incident.
