John Cooper is Elected to Chair FELA Litigation Group
When it comes to the complex field of railroad injury cases there are few Virginia lawyers with as much experience as my colleague John Cooper who has been fighting these cases for two decades.
This was recognized at the American Association for Justice’s annual convention in Chicago when John was again elected to chair the AAJ’s FELA Litigation Group.
John will chair the group for 2012-13, his second year in the role.
FELA is the Federal Employers Liability Act. It’s highly relevant to cities such as Norfolk and Portsmouth and further afield in Virginia because big railroad companies such as Norfolk Southern, CSX, and Amtrak employ many people throughout the Commonwealth. If a railroad employee is injured on the job, they are not eligible for workers’ compensation because their jobs often demand they move from state to state. That’s where FELA comes into the picture.
Being actively involved in an organization such as AAJ which has the best speakers on personal injury topics is a huge advantage. Not every local lawyer takes the time and spends the money to get specialized training of this kind. When you’re selecting a personal injury attorney for your car or truck accident case you should keep this in mind in order to find the best attorney in Virginia that you can to help you in your time of need.
It also pays to have expertise in other legislation relevant to the railroads such as the Locomotive Inspection Act and the Safety Appliance Act.
