Jackknifed Tractor Trailer Causes Accident with Injuries on I-64 in Newport News
A multi-vehicle accident involving a tractor trailer caused injuries and massive delays on Interstate 64 westbound on Friday in Newport News.
Sgt. Michelle Anaya with the Virginia State Police said the big rig crash happened around 12:15 p.m. on April 4 in the westbound lanes east of J. Clyde Morris Boulevard. The crash involved a tractor-trailer as well as two other vehicles.
Virginia State Police reported injuries in the accident. Spokeswoman Sgt. Michelle Anaya said they did not appear to be life-threatening.
The tractor-trailer blocked all lanes of traffic on I-64 for an hour before three lanes reopened. Given the size and weight of big rigs, accidents are often more serious and injuries can be worse. The interstates of Virginia carry a large volume of tractor trailers. It only takes a small mistake by a truck driver such as a hasty lane change or a lapse in concentration for a serious accident to occur. The cause of the I-64 accident had not been revealed as of Friday afternoon.
