Hundreds of Deaths and Injuries Are Caused by Defective Tires : A Virginia Beach Injury Attorney’s Report

Most of the serious injuries and deaths we see in Hampton Roads are caused by driver error, speed or alcohol.
But in some cases a crash can be caused due to no fault of the driver. Dangerous defects in vehicles are more common than we would like to think. Defective tires can cause very serious accidents because when blow outs occur it’s often at high speed.
In past years hundreds of deaths have been traced back to defective tires. An issue with tread separation occurring on Firestone tires resulted in many deaths and led to increased scrutiny of SUVs by consumer advocacy groups.
In 2000, Bridgestone/Firestone and Ford announced jointly that Firestone would recall approximately 14.4 million tires that contain this safety-related defect.
These issues were linked to more than 200 deaths and more than 700 injuries in the United States from Ford Explorers which rolled over as a result of defective tires. In some cases these tires had less than 2,000 miles on them and speeds did not exceed 20 miles-per-hour.
The accidents led to a number of wrongful death lawsuits being brought.
Our Virginia Beach product liability attorneys have written about this subject on a number of occasions and handle cases involving defective tires.
Many times, tire failures, blowouts and detreads are preventable events due to a manufacturing issue. In other cases a tire may have been improperly fitted or a garage may have failed to notice a problem.
