Head-on Crash on Centerville Turnpike in Chesapeake Kills a Motorist

Chesapeake police dealt with a fatal auto accident this morning that left one person dead in a head-on collision on the Centerville Turnpike.
According to Chesapeake police spokesman Ravi Sheth, the accident was reported at 5:05 a.m.
Details remain sketchy but it appears two cars were in the collision. While one of the drivers died, the other sustained minor injuries. Our condolences go to the family members of the victim in this accident.
In Virginia Beach, police dealt with an accident on Thursday morning that left a pedestrian with life-threatening injuries. Police say the man was hit by a vehicle on London Bridge Road, near Interstate 264, early Thursday morning.
The accident blocked two southbound lanes on London Bridge Road for short time between the I-264 overpass and the on-ramp.
Head-on collisions are statistically the most serious kind of crash we see on our highways. You can read more about these kinds of wrecks here on our website.
In many of these cases, a driver has crossed a center line or is engaging in wrong-way driving.
Four years ago, the National Transportation Safety Board carried out detailed research into wrong-way driving. It drew on a study in Virginia that found the death rate for wrong way accidents is a staggering 27 times higher than the death rate we see in other types of accident.
The study pointed out that “remedial measures” have been implemented to cut down on the number of wrong-way accidents since 1968, including measures to improve highway markings and medians.
Nevertheless, many highways in cities such as Chesapeake and Virginia Beach see numerous accidents including head-on collisions. On highways such as Battlefield Boulevard and Military Highway in Chesapeake and London Bridge Road and Independence Boulevard in Virginia Beach, there is considerable congestion and drivers often go too fast for the stop and start conditions.
