The victims of drunk or reckless drivers are most likely to be other drivers or passengers. However, on occasions, residents of homes may be at risk. A Hampton house was hit by cars twice, according to a local TV station.
A report on WAVY noted cars have crashed into Delilah and Clarence Grubb’s home on Fox Hill in Hampton twice in recent years. Nobody was injured on either occasion but there is a hole in the house covered up by wood.
The home was hit by a driver with a medical condition on Jan. 24 and a drunk driver in February 2015.
The Grubbs say their home has been hit six times. It is at the end of Nickerson Boulevard and in an exposed position.
Clarence Grubb said the latest crash has moved the house off its foundations and it’s unfit for habitation. He said:
“The man was coming down Nickerson. He went airborne, went into the house, and it’s not the first time. The first one the lady came in off Fox Hill and slammed into the corner of this house.”
Grubb has video footage of the car plowing through their home on January 24. Grubb said there is a hole in the wall which his brother-in-law’s head slammed into after being pushed to the side by the car coming through the wall.
After the Hampton house was hit by cars, the Grubbs said they are frustrated by the City of Hampton’s lack of response.
Clarence Grubb said the city put up some right-of-way markers, and made some promises.
He said the city said it would erect a guardrail but later reneged on the promise.
The City of Hampton told WAVY.com there’s not enough room on the property for a guardrail.
Cars and trucks hit homes more often than we might think. In 2013, a passenger was injured when a car hit a home in the 900 block of Beach Road in Hampton.
Medics transported a 20-year-old male passenger to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. The 22-year-old male driver of the car was also hurt.
In the same year, a woman was charged with multiple drunk driving offenses after she drove into a home in the Kiln Creek area of Newport News, killing a man and injuring his wife as they stood in the kitchen.
