Alcohol and speed were linked to a New Year’s Day crash in Newport News that claimed the life of a driver and injured a passenger, according to police.
Every year alcohol kills people on New Year’s Eve and early on New Year’s Day and this appears to have been the case in Newport News, where a fast moving car hit a pole.
The crash occurred at 1:35 a.m. at the intersection of J. Clyde Morris Boulevard and Diligence Drive, according to Lou Thurston, a spokesman for Newport News Police Department. Channel 13 identified the driver who died as Jason Oliver Reeves of the 200 block of Brooke Drive in Newport News.
“It hit with enough force that the pole landed approximately 30 feet away. The car came to rest with a second pole midway through the passenger area,” Thurston said.
The driver was killed; the passenger, a 31-year-old man from Hampton was treated for injuries at a local hospital.
I have described in countless blog posts and on video, how alcohol impairs judgment and wrecks lives. Sadly it continues to kill and maim on the highways of Newport News, Hampton, Virginia Beach and other Virginia cities.
Passengers who are hurt by the actions of a drunk driver may have grounds to bring a claim against the driver’s insurance policy. In some cases those hurt by a drunk driver can even claim additional punitive damages in Virginia.
