Deputies in New Kent, VA Enforce Laws to Stop Truckers Using Cell Phones
A new federal regulation bans truck drivers from using hand held devices behind the wheel. But as an experienced Portsmouth trucking injury attorney, I have to wonder how effectively it’s being enforced.
I was, therefore, happy to read about how deputies in New Kent County are have joined forces with Drive SMART Virginia to enforce the regulation, according to WAVY.com.
Under Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration rules, using a handheld device while driving is now considered a primary offense for truck drivers. It’s certainly a change I applaud. Distracted driving causes enough fatalities among car drivers. When you are behind the wheel of a heavy big rig, the consequences of distracted driving can be horrific.
Texting while driving banned for truckers
The new regulations led to the launch of an initiative called “Phone Down, Just Drive.”
“The national pilot program was launched in New Kent County this year. In three weeks, deputies have issued 100 tickets for handheld devices and also found seat belt and other driving violations,” reported WAVY.
“The goal of this campaign is to not write tickets,” Janet Brooking, a spokesperson for Drive SMART Virginia, was quoted as saying. “The goal is to have increased enforcement and a huge education campaign.”
Drive SMART Virginia gave out pamphlets at local rest stops this week, as deputies patrolled the I-64 corridor.
This enforcement campaign is likely to extend from Virginia into other states. See our Portsmouth truck accident attorneys advice on the causes of tractor trailer crashes.
