Defects Lead Toyota to Recall 1.75 Million Vehicles
It has been a bad year for auto makers and the bad news just keeps on coming.
Toyota is no stranger to recalls in recent years. According to a recent BBC News article, Japanese automaker Toyota is recalling 1.75 million vehicles for a variety of different reasons, mostly related to safety. A few years ago, Toyota recalled some of its cars for having faulty gas pedals, which was linked to sudden and uncontrolled acceleration.
In 2009 and 2010, Toyota recalled staggering 6.9 million cars following concerns that floor mats could jam the gas pedal. It also recalled 2.1 million cars for a gas pedal mechanism that could stick. The defect was linked to a number of deaths and wrongful death lawsuits.
The latest recalls deal with faulty brake seals and fuel delivery systems. The faulty brake seals could result in brake fluid leaks, which could cause ineffective braking systems. The fuel delivery issue poses a fire hazard if fuel were to leak from the delivery pipe.
Toyota also recalled 6.4 million cars last April due to problems with windshield wipers and airbag systems. The Japanese company also identified over 600,000 of its Tacoma trucks with possible suspension issues.
American automaker General Motors also issued recalls in the past year for many of their vehicles over a faulty ignition switch, a problem that has been linked to at least 23 deaths. See our previous blog posting about the GM vehicles affected.
