Dallas Cowboys Player Joshua Brent-Price is Charged with Intoxication Manslaughter over Death of Player Jerry Brown Jr.
Time and time again I see accidents on the roads of cities such as Virginia Beach, Norfolk and Newport News that are caused by a deadly combination of alcohol and speed.
Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs can kill. Sadly, another death has made headlines after Dallas Cowboys nose tackle Joshua Price-Brent was arrested and charged with intoxication manslaughter after a single vehicle roll-over crash killed his passenger, Jerry Brown Jr.
Brown had been a linebacker on the team’s practice squad and was Price-Brent’s former teammate at the University of Illinois.
According to ABC News, Price-Brent, 24, was allegedly speeding “well above” the posted 45 mph speed limit in Irving, Texas, in the early hours of the morning when he hit a curb. His car flipped at least once before landing in the middle of a service road.
When police arrived at the scene they found Price-Brent pulling Brown from his Mercedes, which had caught fire.
Brown, 25, was later pronounced dead at a local hospital. Field sobriety tests were performed on Price-Brent, who was later charged with intoxication manslaughter.
My thoughts are with the family of the dead player. Although there is plenty of information out there about the dangers of driving while intoxicated, drunk drivers continue to be a menace on our roads.
According to the Virginia Highway Safety Office, there were 8,221 drunk driving related car accidents in our state in 2010. Sadly, 247 of these were fatal auto accidents.
In the case in Texas, the family of Jerry Brown Jr., have clear grounds to file a wrongful death claim against the driver’s insurance policy, although no amount of money can make up for a life lost in such tragic circumstances.
