Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers Supports the National Council of Negro Women

Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers consistently supports great causes in the Hampton Roads community and helps young people win scholarships so as they can achieve their career goals and educational aspirations. Our law firm recently donated $500 to the National Council of Negro Women, Inc. (NCNW) Tidewater Section Scholarship. This is a great organization that we contribute to every year.

We recently received a letter from Paula Scott, the scholarship chairperson of the NCNW Tidewater Section, and President Doreen Larkin thanking us for our donation.

“NCNW Tidewater Section would like to sincerely thank you for your sponsorship donation towards our scholarship and community outreach efforts,” the letter stated. “In spite of our country’s pandemic state and not having our annual scholarship fundraiser event, we were still able and honored to present two lovely young ladies financial scholarships to aid them in furthering their education. And your donation helped us to make that happen. Alone, we can do a little…but together, we can do a lot with a little.”

The NCNW awarded scholarships to two deserving candidates in 2020, totaling $1,500. Bretia Green, a 2020 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School in Portsmouth, graduated with a 4.35 GPA. She is the recipient of several honors and awards, including the Virginia Pilot Achievement Award. Bretia took part in the Upward Bound/TRIO Program, worked as an intern at the Portsmouth City Treasurer’s Office where she was designated “Associate Deputy City Treasurer.”

She also worked as a part-tim a cashier at Walgreen’s during her high school years. She also found time to volunteer for the Friends of Portsmouth Public Library, the Key Club, the Student Council Association, and the Portsmouth Public Schools Student Advisory Board. She remains active at Deep Creek Baptist Church.

Bretia’s love for mathematics led her to Norfolk State University where she will pursue a double major in Mathematics and Computer Science with an ultimate career goal of becoming an engineer.

Shanice Mills who is currently attending Tidewater Community College – Portsmouth Campus, received a $500 scholarship. The honor student was named on the Dean’s and President’s Lists for maintaining a 4.0 since beginning her studies.

Shanice has also received other various awards, including the Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Award in Fall 2018. Shanice takes part in the school’s work-study program and she also enjoys playing the piano, painting, and drawing. Shanice finds the time to participate in community outreach services at her church, Point Harbor Community Church. Shanice is studying for an Associate of Applied Science Degree in funeral services at TCC-Portsmouth. The NCNW was founded in 1935 by Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune, an influential activist and educator. The organization promotes education with a focus on science, technology, engineering, and math

Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers is committed to helping young people from Hampton Roads realize their dreams. We have also assisted youth during the devastating COVID-19 pandemic. Our firm donated $5,000 to the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore to help young people in Hampton Roads receive vital food supplies during the pandemic. The donation provided almost 13,000 meals.

Our sponsorships and donations are made under the Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers Cares campaign. Every year, we make significant contributions or sponsor non-profits and other organizations, like the National Council of Negro Women, that do amazing work in the Hampton Roads area.
