Bar associations play an important role in making the legal profession more accessible to the public and in holding educational events for legal professionals. We are delighted to announce Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers partner Griff O’Hanlon was recently sworn in to the executive committee of the Norfolk & Portsmouth Bar Association.
The 11-strong executive committee of the NPBA is charged with running the operations of the association as a whole. It coordinates with members of the bench and bar on local issues pertinent to the practice of law, facilitating community engagement, providing social events for our membership, and hosting continuing legal education seminars.
Griffin O’Hanlon joined Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers as an attorney in the fall of 2015. He became a partner in 2020. He attended Great Bridge High School in Chesapeake for his freshman and sophomore years, before his parents relocated to Illinois. As well as being an executive member of the Norfolk Portsmouth Bar Association, Griff is a member of the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association, the American Association of Justice, and the Virginia Beach Bar Association.
The NPBA has served the Hampton Roads legal profession, the judiciary, and the public for well over a century – ever since 1900. It is headquartered in the City of Norfolk Courthouse at 150 Saint Paul’s Boulevard, close to the offices of Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers.
The Norfolk and Portsmouth Bar Association’s mission is to promote the administration of justice, to educate the public about the important role law plays in their daily lives, and enhance the image of the legal profession in the local community.
The association boasts six committees that help lawyers in Hampton Roads. They include the mock trial committee that works with Norfolk Public Schools and solicits attorney volunteers to coach middle school teams for trial competitions.
The pro bono committee works closely with the Legal Aid Society of Eastern Virginia to sponsor programs to raise awareness of pro bono services in the legal profession.
Continuing Legal Education is one of the most important services provided by the Norfolk & Portsmouth Bar Association. Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers attorneys have sponsored many CLE events on issues such as automobile accidents and injuries at businesses in Virginia.
The NPBA hosts a Bench Bar Conference every year. This year’s topic was COVID-19 and the courts. Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers was a sponsor of the event. The NPBA also hands out two scholarships – in the amounts of $3,000 and $2,000 – every year to deserving local students.
The bar association hosts the Norfolk Law Library, a public law library and non-profit foundation, to serve the legal research needs of lawyers, the general public, and the courts. The library works with the local community to improve access to legal and law-related information and support the law library profession.
