Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers Donates $5,000 to the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia

Donating check

NORFOLK, VA — March 11, 2021: Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers has donated $5,000 to the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore to help young people in Hampton Roads receive vital food supplies during the pandemic.

Chief Marketing Officer Cassidy Lewis presented the donation to Emma Inman, Vice President of Programs and Development, at the non-profit’s offices on Tidewater Drive in Norfolk.

John Cooper, one of our founding partners, was intent on making this donation happen,” Lewis said. “He and our other partners know that 2020 took a toll on a lot of people in our community, and John wanted to give back in a significant way. We’re here at his request and we’re honored to make that happen today.”

Lewis stressed the importance of donating money from the firm back into the community. “Hampton Roads has invested in us, so we want to make sure we invest back into Hampton Roads, especially in the areas of education and youth. The Foodbank is one of our favorite organizations that works every day to do that.”

Inman explained how the Foodbank helps people who lack food in the community but also seeks to tackle the “root causes of hunger” by leading people to self-sufficiency.

“People don’t realize how prevalent hunger in our community is,” Inman said. “We have all seen the news stories throughout the pandemic of long lines at food banks across the country. That existed in our community before the pandemic. Certainly, the pandemic has exacerbated that. But we have neighbors who are hungry,” she added.

The $5,000 donation provided 12,500 meals, according to Inman. She expressed how gifts like the donation from Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers help the Foodbank to ensure kids have the meals that they need. “We cannot thank you enough and we can’t thank the community enough for the generosity everyone has shown through the pandemic.” “We want kids to have the healthy, nutritious food that they need to thrive, to grow, and be able to learn,” she said.

Inman points out Hampton Roads residents can help the Foodbank’s mission in many ways. It accepts donations, welcomes volunteers, and wants people to spread the word about the vital job it is doing in the Tidewater area and beyond. The Foodbank details ways you can help on its website.

Research from Old Dominion University found 180,000 people in Hampton Roads cannot reliably access food and are not sure where their next meals are coming from.

Academics revealed the full extent of food insecurity in the region in 2018, two years before the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated the problem. About 1 in 10 residents in the region experience food insecurity, The Virginian-Pilot reported. About a third of them are children.

The $5,000 donation was made as part of the Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers Cares campaign. Every year, Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers makes significant contributions or sponsors non-profits and other organizations that do great work in the Hampton Roads area. The firm recognizes the serious impact food insecurity has on young people’s education in our region.

Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers supports young people in many ways. The law firm recently announced its 2021 Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers Focused Driver Scholarship which raises awareness of the dangers of distracted driving to teens.
