Cooper Hurley Donates $2,500 to Help Foodbank Feed Kids for the Holidays
Many school children in Hampton Roads will be taking a well-earned spring break over the next week.
But for an ever growing minority the holiday may bring hunger rather than fun because they don’t have enough to eat.
That’s where the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia comes into the picture with its backpack program that provides food before a weekend or a holiday. This week the Norfolk-based Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers made a donation of $2,500 to the Foodbank for the campaign. We will also be donating $1 to the Foodbank for every new ‘like’ on our Facebook site or follow on Google+ as a result of the campaign until June 1, 2013.
This nationally-recognized backpack program distributes nutritious food to children at the end of the school day, before weekends or school breaks.
More than 87,700 children in the Foodbank’s area which includes the cities of Norfolk, Chesapeake, Suffolk, Virginia Beach, Portsmouth and the Eastern Shore, are eligible to receive free or reduced-price school lunches – a reliable indicator that hunger plays a part in their lives.
Attorney John Cooper talks about the importance of the Foobank to the Hampton Roads community
At present, the Foodbank serves 46 elementary schools in south Hampton Roads. During the fiscal year 2012, the Foodbank distributed over 48,000 bags to over 2,700 students through the program.
Bags and backpacks are filled with food that children take home on weekends. They are discreetly distributed to children on the last day before the weekend or holiday vacation.
Cooper Hurley attorneys John Cooper and Jim Hurley presented a check for $2,500 to Marianne Smith Vargas, Chief Philanthropy Officer of the Foodbank at its headquarters on Tidewater Drive in Norfolk this week.
“It’s a great program and the Foodbank is an incredible organization because they are able to really use the donations they get to the fullest effect,” John Cooper said. “It makes us so proud to be able to help our fellow citizens of South Hampton Roads and this Foodbank which is really an incredible organization.”
“Since 2008 the Foodbank has seen a 65 percent increase in demand. About 32 percent of those are children so over 41,000 kids right now in southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore don’t know where their next meal is coming from,” said Smith Vargas.
“The donation from Cooper Hurley is really going to help us feed those kids and we certainly appreciate their support.”
