As a personal injury attorney for over 25 years I am quite familiar with chiropractic medicine and its use in treating injuries from car accidents. I truly believe that chiropractic doctors can do incredible good in the treatment of people with musculoskeletal injuries to the back and neck from automobile accidents and other kinds of trauma. Many chiropractors are some of the most caring and intelligent healthcare providers that I have ever known. The use of chiropractic to readjust the spine which has gotten out of alignment because of strain/sprains and other insult to the connective tissues that hold our bodies together cannot be denied.
In the past there has been some hesitation to fully accept the local chiropractor as part of the healthcare landscape. Some of that has to do with turf battles between orthopedic doctors and physical therapists on one side and the chiropractic doctor on the other in that they often treat the same kinds of patients with the same kinds of injuries with similar and overlapping treatment methods.
Another reason is that chiropractic is somewhat new and in more conservative places like Virginia it takes a little bit longer for everyone to understand and accept a newer treatment method. However, I think that at this point most doctors outside of chiropractic recognize that it can serve a useful purpose as part of a treatment regime for folks who have been hurt in automobile accidents and the Virginia Code which is the written statutory law put out by the Commonwealth General Assembly recognizes chiropractic doctors as physicians who are entitled to treat patients for injuries to their necks and backs.
There are also many advantages of chiropractic treatment over other forms of treatment. The first to me is the hands-on nature of the chiropractic doctor. The chiropractic doctor uses very ancient methods of actually laying hands on the patient in a way that they can feel things are out of place or abnormal like twitching muscles from an involuntary spasm.
Chiropractors often have more time to spend with patients than other physicians who may be more time constrained and as a result can listen to the patient’s complaints and symptoms of pain in a way that allow them to better address those problems. Finally the local chiropractor has often set up shop in the corner of your local strip mall in your neighborhood in a way that allows you to get seen by the chiropractor often much more easily than other types of physicians.
In the immediate aftermath of an injury from a car wreck being able to get into the doctor quickly and being able to see them in a convenient way to fit your schedule for the necessary care over the first few weeks and months makes a big difference. By getting early intervention by a chiropractor often permanent injury can be avoided and the person not only will feel better faster in healing up from the injury but will also be able to get back to their lives and their work more quickly.
This is not to say that all chiropractors are created equal. Some are certainly more professional in their demeanor than others. However by and large it is an honorable profession and one that probably deserves more respect than it often gets from the public who might not themselves experienced the benefits of chiropractic treatment. Insurance companies also love to pretend that chiropractic is not beneficial or shouldn’t be treated as a full equal partner with other types of medicine but the insurance companies have an incentive to try to downplay the benefits because then they have an excuse for refusing to pay bills or otherwise save themselves money on how much they have to pay out after their insured driver causes a collision with injuries.
